Apache + PHP + MySQL etcetc
Thought it would be good to wrap up some information into one thread.

Alot of people want to test PHP sites localy, maybe their php site uses a database - a mysql database so they turn to installing apache on their local pc. As pointed out in this thread the proccess is a bit complicated soooo people are always looking for short cuts.

as i posted before XAMPP is a very good program but it insits you uise the XAMPP control panel, it also dosent come installed with many plugins like tomcat etc etc also not as secure as it could be

so my recommended alternate comes with all this...
http://www.devside.net/web/server/free/suite

downloadable here
http://www.devside.net/web/server/free/download

installs to root of a drive or partion in \www\ very nicley setup, phpmyadmin is installed by default aswell... just change a few passwords and you got a very reliable secure apache server with all addons your likley to need

just my 2p

regards

alec

Back in the day when I was using IIS it was pain to install PHP and it also isn't in the home edition of windows.

php is really very easy to install for IIS and you can actually download an msi from the php site to do most of the work for you....

One thing I have found issues with is that the most recent versions of php (after php 4.4 apparently) don't natively support mysql so you have to do a bit of arsing around where you didn't in the past.....

Shame this was only a suggestion. And happens to be a nice alternative for people who don't like IIS.
