yikes that sounds complicated!

What sound card is it? I ask as they often come with the software to set these kinds of thing up. Mine is a realtek and it can do things like this and with vista you can assign programs to diffrerent outputs.

well actually...
i have two... one is fixed to my motherboard - Realtek
another one is a Trust 5.1 PCI Sound Card with optical input...

for the first one(the one attached to my motherboard), i just have the "Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager" in the control panel... i don't know how to do it from there.
My motherboard, by the way, is ECS Nf650iSLIT-A

i bought the second one through ebay without any CDs so i don't have any additional software for this card (except for the drivers of course, which i downloaded off Trust's website)

The following is a link to the webpage of my (second) sound card
http://www.trust.com/products/product.aspx?artnr=12950

and i have xp professional...

This shouldn't be too difficult to do. (famous last words...)

Go to Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices.

First go to the Audio tab, and under the Sound Playback section make sure it is set to use the Trust card as default. Then click advanced. Make sure it is set up for 5.1 playback.

Then click Volume (under Sound Playback) and you will see the mixer. You may have to get the advanced controls from the options menu to see them all. Mute anything you don't use and make sure the optical channel isn't muted or all the way down.

That should do it, though I don't know you sound card.
