Call of Duty 4
Having finally completed Saints Row 2 on the xbox, I now have the time to try some of the other games I have for my xbox.

Tried Forza 3 and it is very a pretty looking game, but the rewind function makes it almost impossible to lose.

So last night I decided to try Call of Duty 4. I know this is an old one, but it was one I got given and it is new to me.

I didnt hold out high hopes as first person shooters on consoles generally mean me looking at the floor, then ceiling and randomly spraying bullets in nothing like the right directions.

However I have to say this game is superb, my game play is exactly as described above but that is more than made up for in the single player missions by the superb cinematics and story. Within seconds I was absolutely absorbed in it (if it hadnt been for me promising to watch the inbetweeners with the wife then I would have been up all night playing I think).

It is just like watching a movie, but a move where you get to play an active part.

Also loving the comedy moments, each time you die it tells you a fact about war and the cost of a battleship. At the end of first mission your running to escape off a sinking ship. As you reach the bow of the ship your helecopter is hovering off the edge and when you reach it a message pops up saying Press A to jump, which of course I didnt and simply splashed and died.

Instead of the usual hint it comes up saying "Nobody makes their first jump" which made me genuinely lol.

Anyone else played?

RE: Call of Duty 4
I played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare when it came out and there were some very striking set pieces that will genuinely stick with me (which I won't ruin for you as I could unleash a spoileriffic batch of prose that you'd hate me for). Some of the scenes though did bring a slightly sickened feeling to myself, this may not happen to you, but for me there were parts where I thought it was getting to the point of gratuitousness. However, there is one scene that I will genuinely put up there as one of the best that I have experienced in gaming (it's up there with storming Omaha Beach in Medal of Honour) and I hope that it has the same effect on you, of leaving your jaw open wondering what's to come.

Although in general I enjoyed the game, I thought that some parts were extremely easy and others meant that I just had to run through the endlessly spawning enemies. Maybe I just thought the plot a bit too much on the far-fetched side of things and sadly this only got worse for Modern Warfare 2. I think my main critique would be of the disjointed nature of the series, which tends to flick about in both location and time as it sees fit (it's the same reason I disliked Lost after the first series).

I will definitely say you've got some interesting times ahead until you finish it. Smile

RE: Call of Duty 4
Played a little more last night and it just more and more exciting. I replayed the part I had already done before and this time stormed through it.

I have come across some silly little annoyances like getting stuck on some parts of the scenery and CPC's not moving out of your way and blocking where you need to be.

That said I do love it, and have actually managed to gain some control over the characters direction (no more floor, ceiling, floor, ceiling). I imagine I would still get my ass handed to me on multiplayer though.

RE: Call of Duty 4
Yeah I think multiplayer might not be the best experience for you now as most of the players left, who didn't migrate to MW2, will be full on hardcore players who know all the tricks.

I'd wait for Call of Duty: Black Ops to get my MP CoD fix as at least everyone effectively starts at the same level.

I can't wait until you get to the end of the single player though, as I am struggling to bite my lip and not reveal anything more about what you've got coming up... Smile

RE: Call of Duty 4
New CoD looks interesting, especially the gambling multiplayer games, and it doesn't seem quite as imbalanced as MW2 ended up being... bloody Nukes...

However, I'll probably be getting it for PC and saving my console shooting action for Brink or Bulletstorm in the new year, mainly because I will probably just about be able to afford a ps3 by that point, sadly I won't be joining the Xboxers as I have a Bluray collection that's quite dear to me (maybe next console generation we can all get together and discuss what we're going for...).

Although I think my next actual game purchase will be Starcraft II... I've finally been tempted back into the world of RTS games having gone turn-based for a while.

Aside from that, there's plenty coming out on all formats to get excited about. Smile
