NAS box with security?
Monkeys!
I'm fancying getting a NAS box. 1 disk drive is fine, it's job is purely as a backup drive and software/network RAID mirror. It doesn't need RAID within itself. My primary concerns are: 1) Totally independent of my PC. I want it to sit in a far corner of the house, near a network port, and not explode if my PC's PSU dies. 2) Secure: I want it to challenge me for a login when I try to browse to it on the network, the same way a mapped network drive to another PC might. Ideally I would like to lock it down to just a few specific IP addresses. (This is because certain people on my network have a penchant for viruses; I have no intention of allowing them onto my storage unit!) Any suggestions? Don't mind with or without a hard drive already in it, I have a 400GB disk spare, but if it comes with one, I'd like to be in the TB range. Cheers

RE: NAS box with security?
Most of the simple NAS boxes, by the likes of Laice and Buffalo do these functions natively.

Would go for one that supports IPSec too .. encypt your traffic .. so they wont be able to use sniffers to pickup when your tranfering your "movie collection" to your NAS drive ...

RE: NAS box with security?
Reading a few reviews on Buffalo LinkStation Live™ - LS-CHL and saw this mentioned
Quote:n a guess I checked [...]). and was able to log into the unit and control it. Why they don't mention this in the Instructions is beyond me! As long as you're on the LAN you can log in this way. You can set up user accounts and shared folders with the menus. You still see two folders on the device. INFO and SHARE. INFO has the software (PC and OS X)and a PDF of the manual in case you lose them. SHARE is your main dir. If you run activate Bit Torrent then it will create a folder inside SHARE. To use Bit torrent, you log into the device as Admin. Then you can cut and paste URL's to torrents and it will download them. [...]. However the reviews are not glowing, but reading between the lines the first few sound like improper care and lack of tech savvy. The later reviews are v positive on the whole http://www.amazon.com/Buffalo-LinkStatio...Descending I am actually considering one myself now

RE: NAS box with security?
Ahh, fair enough, just wanted to be sure that's what it does
![]() My goal is to couple NAS with MirrorFolder to have a nice network raid setup for all my important folders. Currently got an old athlon 1700 in a shuttle case doing the job, but it's a lot larger, brighter, louder, and energy consumptive than I really need xD Plus if I get a NAS, I'll stop thinking about building an Atom based mITX media player, and buy a PS3 instead

lol
My plan is to get one of those, plug a USB disk in the back and store everything on the network drive, with it backing up the USB drive. I will then use it as media storage and use Xbox as the media Center bought an xbox again now btw
