Need help to optimize my Dell Laptop

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
500GB SATA

Well... simply put, I feel like my laptop is not running at 100%. I think that there are a lot of processes that came by default with my laptop or that ended up on my computer that really limit it's capacity. I realize this when I'm running games like Starcraft 2 and I'm forced to run all the graphics on Low, since if I pump it up, something weird happens, and the laptop stops receiving power from the charger. (The blue light on the end of the charger goes off. I'm forced to disconnect the power from the wall and re-connect it.)
Right out the bat, I was thinking to format it after making a really small backup of documents. I don't know if you guys have any advice on what to tweak, any tips on Win 7, and mainly maintenance for the long run, such as registry issues, useless processes that might appear a long the run, etc.

laptop suppliers are well known for stuffing them full of software you dont want or need.

you may want to run hijackthis on your computer and post the log back here to see what we can strip out for you.
