Neko Recommends: Startup Delayer
Startup Delayer from R2 studios is proving to be quite a nifty little app, yet incredibly simple.

People often wonder why Windows takes so long to login. Sure, you may have 6-12 programs launching at start up, but kill any one of them, and launch it manually, and it'll be there in less than a second... so why does it take 10 programs 60 seconds to launch? Simple: competition for your hard drive and CPU time. Unless you have enough CPU cores to run each program on it's own, bouncing between applications wastes time.

All Startup Delayer does is look at the list of programs you have launching on start up, and allow you to set a delay for each of them. From experience, taking about a dozen programs (e.g. anti virus, 3 messengers, sound control panel, graphics control panel, etc) and spacing them at 5 second intervals, will make the Windows login process about 50% faster - and that's end to end. Because there's only 1 kicking up at once, you won't get stuck with the 'busy' pointer either, so you can probably start 80% faster than before.

Oh, and it's free, which I'm sure will please the tight fisted among us Wink

Correction, Windows' default handling of startup programs is lame. When something so simple as manually staggering startups proves faster, that's just correcting a mistake Tongue

Yeah, lucky you... But for those of us not on this year's finest (probably 95-99% of all PC users), and who sit through 1-2 minutes of startup programs fighting for the hard drive, it's very handy.
