New Xbox or old xbox?
I have a bit of a quandry and am after some advice.

So I am getting an xbox 360, but which option should I choose:

1) Buy a new xbox 360s.
Pro's: Smaller, integrated wifi and quiet
Con's: Cost £200(ish)
2) Buy an old style x360
Pro's: Cost (can pick them up for about £70 - £80)
Con's: Noisy, wont work with kinnect?

To be honest am not bothered about integrated wifi as I will have it hardwired anyways.

The lower cost of the old style will help me convince the wife

The quietness of the new version however will be nicer when used as a media centre.

Help me make my mind up.

I think the old Xbox 360 will work with kinect but the new one is able to do it without a second power supply which is quite a large advantage given the size of the Xbox's power brick,

I hope this is the case as I don't fancy buying a new Xbox just to get Kinect

With the noise I only find the noise really kicks in when gaming so for media streaming it shouldn't really be a problem but have heard that the new one is a massive improvement on this score.

I would agree on the wifi, it is nice the option is there now but I don't really think that it is up to scratch for a decent gaming or media centre experience especially for streaming HD video

The key points for me on the new Xbox are the size and less power cables (with kinect) and a smaller power brick. Also the case design is supposed to be improved to remove the red ring of death (they also got rid of the ring of lights on the front so the RROD can definitely not happen lol)

RE: New Xbox or old xbox?
The old 360's will work with Kinect, but you'll have to get an adapter for it. To reduce noise you can install most games to the hard drive, this cuts out pretty much all noise on the Xbox to be honest, as well as slightly speeding up load times. As Fail Whale rightly points out the main source of noise from the Xbox is the DVD drive. So if you can pick up an elite with a 120Gb HDD that should easily cover all your gaming needs. I think there are even 250Gb models out there if you can find them.

The new one is black and shiny, looks more aggresive in a kind of Alienware style and has more USB ports which is handy for backing up data onto USB sticks...

Aside from that if you're not all that fussed about the wireless I'd source an old 360 elite, preferably one that has a good sized hard drive and has only recently been purchased, so you'll be guaranteed one of the more reliable "Jasper" boards.

Hehe, the RRoD is a valid point, but it has only been replaced with a Red Dot of Death (the main power light goes red when it bricks now, which some already have done). As far as I know, the latest version of Kinect no longer requires an additional power source as they have removed the internal processor that it was initially prototyped with, but I'll have to check that.

I also did some research into Kinect... as you may have spotted and can say that it definitely has a power cable, but no confirmation as to whether that will need it's own power brick.

I think the term power brick is not quite right, power "breeze block" should be the new term from today forward.
