Nvidia 8800 GT + drivers = crash
Ok folks I am in need of either some help or possibly just reassurance that the conclusion I have come to is correct.
I just spent the last couple of days trying to breathe life back in to my old gaming rig, with the vague idea of playing some Starcraft 2. Anyway after much faffing, fiddling and wiggling of wires I am now at the stage where everything works (HOORAH), windows XP is loaded, updated and running apps with no issues. However, the one thing that doesn't work is the graphics card. If I dont install the nvidia drivers then Windows works fine. IF however I load old nvidia drivers, new nvidia drivers or let Windows update choose drivers then Windows won't boot, it either hangs on the loading bar screen or reboots (no blue screen error codes or anything). So my question is, is there anything you can think of I haven't thought of? Alternate drivers? Or is it as I suspect, this gfx card has turned it's toe's up? - Techmonkey ================ Enterprise Business IT Support | SME IT Support | Home Support Available |

That's an odd situation, so your monitor is connected to your graphics card and when using the base Windows display drivers works but not when you install 3rd party drivers?
One thing you might want to try is booting from a Linux Live CD (Ubuntu is the easiest in this situation http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download) Then install the proprietary drivers on the live CD. Just to see if that likes it. Register Linux Machines: 408537, 413272, 413273, 435704, 435721

You have plugged a power cable into the rear of the card haven't you?

I was googling for this problem and found you post. I have the same problem with the Nvidia 8800GT. Without drivers: windows works After instaled drivers: bios works, windows crash in loading screen, or the screen goes black... I tested in other computer and have the same problem... I think is I think the problem is related to CPU and memory clock, because when I try GPU-Z it cannot capture this information. |

Hi PDX, :welcome to TechMonkeys
Ok well the issue with mine turned out to be a faulty GFX card am afraid. I ended up replacing it and the issue went away entirely. Have you got one you could try from a friend? - Techmonkey ================ Enterprise Business IT Support | SME IT Support | Home Support Available |
